The Storyteller
oil, cut canvas
25 x 25 in
This painting addresses the impact of identity and culture through assimilation and silence. I reference family photographs of people I know very little about. I imagine the woman was a great storyteller who held the key to all of the insightful information about my history. I fragment and embellish her portrait with elements that honor and celebrate her existence in an effort to reclaim and preserve the threads of my own Mexican ancestry.

Truth Be Told
acrylic, oil, cut canvas
26 x 20 in
This painting specifically addresses the impact of identity and culture through assimilation and silence. The landscape becomes fragmented similar to a fleeting memory. I add color and native flora to connect myself to my family history and its native land. When histories become lost and stories are left untold, finding truth is a journey. Sometimes all we have are sentimental remnants and hazy memories, and we are left to create that which we seek.
