The egg is often a symbol of rebirth and protection, and in Indigenous Mexican ritual, it takes form as a tool to ward off harm. This sculpture draws from the concept of “Limpias”, a practice that blends Mayan, Aztec, and Spanish Catholic traditions involving prayer and rubbing an egg over the body to absorb trauma and fear.
Eggs overflow out of a nightstand drawer, accumulating like forgotten objects, reflecting how often we neglect our spiritual and mental health.
My grandmother performed many limpias on me as a child and with her passing, I question how that knowledge will continue in my family. This work uses the ritual as a way to think about our relationships to self, family, and home, and gestures toward healing through care, ritual, and collective remembrance. I am stepping into the role of learning and healing.
